Abstract
To evaluate the results of management and the prognostic factors of fungal corneal ulcer. This study was carried out retrospectively on 22 patients who were microbiologically diagnosed to have fungal corneal ulcer and treated from June 2000 to September 2007. The clinical outcome, history of trauma, visual acuity, presence of hypopyon, species of identified fungi, size of ulcer and time of treatment were evaluated. The mean duration of the treatment was 56.8 days. Of the 22 patients analysed in the study, 15 (68.2%) were treatment successes, 7 (31.8%) were failed and eviscerated. The predictors of treatment success were visual acuity at the first visit which was better than 0.2 (100%), without hypopyon (76.9%), if the ulcer size was less than 10 mm2 (100%), and if the treatment was started within 2 days from the onset (80%). Among the factors, the initial visual acuity (p = 0.004) and the size of ulcer (p = 0.015) showed statistical significance. In patients with fungal keratitis, better initial visual acuity and smaller ulcer size were predictors of treatment success.
